Island Environment

The Coral Reef
The reef is very fragile and is the island’s only protection from the sea. Coral is an animal with an exoskeleton
It grows about 2.5 cm per year. They die when touched
It is illegal to take or export corals or shells and to stand, touch or damage the reef

Marine Life
Always mind your steps when snorkeling, swimming, or walking in the lagoon. The lagoon is a nursery for marine life
Sting rays can camouflage themselves by burrowing in the sand. A sting ray has a barbed tail which is used to defend itself. Please mind that the barb can cause a painful wound
Fishing is not permitted on the beach or jetties because the fish are an attraction for our guests. Feeding and touching of any marine life is prohibited and a fine may be charged if violated

Fauna
The most common local land animal is the Garden Lizard, a small, harmless lizard which feeds on insects
Frequently seen running across the sand, sitting on a tree branch or walking across a wall

Seabirds & Shorebirds
You can spot seabirds and shorebirds on the beaches scuttling in and out of overhanging bushes. Seabirds are extremely important to islanders and more especially to fishermen. Seabirds flocks are an important indicator to the presence of tuna schools. Please do not feed the birds around the island
